70 years creating dreams

“… There was once a man… and that man had a dream. He built it from scratch, pampered it, made it big and that dream appears today throughout the geography of this country and beyond it, in bright and bright neon. Menkes exists with him and after him "

For 70 years we have put our hearts, knowledge and experience into the production of our creations. The founder's dream

«I remember my first costume perfectly. My father bought it for me at the Selfridges store in London. I was 9 years old".

Patriarch of a family dedicated for 70 years to the manufacture of costumes, shoes and accessories for the entertainment world, Marcos Menkes, son of a wealthy Tangier banker, suffered the setbacks of fortune that affected so many families in the early days of the Second World War. Refugee in Madrid at the age of 12, he studied at the French Lyceum and began his professional life as an apprentice to the Catalan couturier Marbel, who made costumes for theater and film artists. At just 21 years old, Marcos Menkes set up his first modest business, specialized in making regional costumes. Inspired by an idea and driven by his passion as a visionary in love with theater, dance, circus, music hall and popular celebrations, he created a company whose founding values continue to be valid: tradition, professionalism, craftsmanship, demand, quality and listening. attentive customer service to better respond to their needs. A family business that for more than half a century has been a benchmark in its sector nationally and internationally. Transmitted to his children and collaborators, today the spirit of the founder is still alive, and Marcos Menkes' dream continues to materialize on stages around the world as a tribute to his vision and the dedication with which he consecrated his life.

Perpetuate excellence

Marcos's son, Jacobo Menkes takes up the baton and takes on the challenge of preserving the family heritage and defending one of the mainstays of his success: the artisanal production of clothing and footwear, which not only allows us to offer impeccable quality in each piece, but also to adapt it to the physical characteristics of each artist and to the harsh conditions demanded by the stages. This artisan tradition coexists in harmony with the innovations brought by new technologies, incorporated only to the extent that they improve the product and with the obligatory attention to detail and finish. Always guided by a strong concept of customer service, his family and collaborators, professionals whose know-how is also transmitted from generation to generation, accompany Jacobo on his quest to preserve and expand the founder's legacy and message.

70 years of passion

Created in 1950, Menkes celebrates its 70th anniversary today. Born from the founder's fascination for the beauty, fantasy and glamor of the entertainment world, the company was built on hard work and enthusiasm, with solid values that do not accuse the passage of time and consolidated through the efforts of a family Inspired by the vision of its founder. Only a firm with these characteristics is capable of maintaining its national and international prestige intact for 70 years, as well as its ability to attract great theater and dance artists, many of whom have been trusting for decades in the breadth of its offer, in its professionalism and in the quality of its products and services. 70 years of passion shared and renewed by a team of true professionals and backed by a unique and irreplaceable career.

The art and craft of creating dreams

Our mission, let's call it our art, lies in interpreting the imaginary of artists and proposing designs that channel their inspiration. But in show business, clothing and footwear are put to the test at every function. That is why the imagination must be allied with specific characteristics of durability and resistance, and with historical rigor when it comes to period costumes and footwear. Only professionalism and experience can guarantee the fulfillment of these requirements, together with research, craftsmanship and the most modern technological innovations. All of this constitutes our trade, acquired in the course of a long career and consolidated in seven decades of profession.

From Madrid's Gran Vía to the world

More than half a century separates the small store from Madrid's Gran Vía, where the dream of founder Marcos Menkes was conceived, of the opening of his stores in New York and Paris in the 90s. the Lido and the Crazy Horse in Paris, the Radio City Music Hall, the Metropolitan Opera in New York and, more recently, Le Cirque du Soleil and different shows on Broadway. The national and international success of Menkes and its position as a benchmark in the sector have been consolidated with the establishment of its network of shops and workshops, which includes Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao and Valencia.

A noble artisan tradition

Faithful to the traditions of the House since its foundation, the artisanal and personalized realization governs the vast majority of our production. In addition to our own workshops dedicated to tailoring, sometimes and at the request of customers we set up temporary workshops in the theaters themselves, where we also provide tailoring and tailoring services for garments or special equipment, according to our own design or the artistic direction of the theater. or show. We never lose sight of the fact that attentive listening to the needs of each client is essential at the beginning of each project, the final success of which will depend on the most professional performance and the meticulous attention to detail that characterizes us.
